My name is Suzanne Tidewater and I am a writer, educator and practitioner of Goddess Spirituality. I received my Ph.D. in Psychology from a university in the Midwest and I am a full-time college professor. I am also a cis-gender, middle-class, able-bodied, childless, single, white, middle-aged, queer, American woman with multiple mental health diagnoses who is a survivor of childhood sexual abuse.
My writing has two purpose, the first of which is to affirm trauma survivors on their journey through Goddess Spirituality. I have another blog at Sagewoman. You can find my Goddessing From the Heart blog page on Facebook and follow me @goddessingheart on Instagram and Twitter.
I am also the facilitator of the The Affirming Writer Project, which is intended to challenge mind-body-spirit writers, myself included, to deepen our stance of solidarity with those who are marginalized. I will speak from the places of marginalization that I occupy, and intend to step back to make space for others in my areas of unearned advantage. The project’s Instagram is @theaffirmingwriterproject on Instagram.
In addition to my professional interests, I also enjoy nature photography, cooking, creating sacred ritual and attending local festivals.
What can I learn from this? That’s a question I constantly ask myself during difficult situations. Sometimes the answer appears instantly and sometimes it feels it will take my whole lifetime to unravel it. As a survivor of childhood trauma, there have been many times where I had no answers for what happened to me, and what to do with it. As I’ve found my spiritual home in Goddess spirituality, I have not only experienced healing but have also felt my heart quicken with a deep sense of mission. The unfolding answer in connection–connection to self, to others, and to Goddess. My purpose here is to affirm you on your own spiritual journey as you search for meaning. Whether you are a trauma survivor yourself or a support person for someone who is, I hope you will journey with me on your path through Goddess spirituality.
My life’s work also includes going deeper–engaging not only with the areas of suffering I’ve experienced but also joining with others who have experienced systemic oppression and discrimination. I desire for my writing to be inclusive and affirming as there are many places within Goddess Spirituality where this isn’t the case, and because I want to relate from a place of our shared humanity. We hold collective as well as individual shadows that, through dedicated effort, can be transformed.
My education and experience are related to psychology and Goddess Spirituality, but I am not a licensed mental health professional nor an ordained minister. This blog is intended for general information and entertainment purposes only; always seek the advice of professionals when addressing mental health and/or spiritual concerns.
